Ethical Investments

Catholic Way Investments uses the US Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Socially Responsible Investment Policies as a guide*, which cover six major areas:

  • Protecting human life
  • Promoting human dignity
  • Reducing arms production
  • Pursuing economic justice
  • Protecting the environment
  • Encouraging corporate responsibility

In addition to SRI guidelines, all Catholic Way investment portfolios must also meet civil fiduciary standards in a cost-effective manner while seeking risk-adjusted market returns.

* While the program intends to meet USCCB policies, there can be no assurance that they will always be met.

Company Screening

With these policies as our guidelines, Catholic Way has established a comprehensive filtering process for screening individual companies—and entire business sectors—whose activities run counter to established Catholic priorities. These screens exclude companies that:

  • Directly participate in abortions
  • Manufacture abortifacients or contraceptives
  • Are involved in embryonic stem cell research
  • Make 15% or more of their total business revenue from pornographic materials
  • Are for-profit providers of healthcare
  • Earn 20% or more of their total business revenue from the production or sale of military weapons and weapons of mass destruction
  • Earn 15% or more of their total business revenue from the production or sale of alcohol or tobacco products
  • Earn 20% or more of total business revenue from gambling activities
  • Have had controversies concerning child labor either in or outside the United States
  • Are engaged in certain for-profit businesses within or in association with the Republic of Sudan
